Meet Sparkle!!!
Animal Aid is a non-profit no-kill shelter rescue and outreach organization which is actively working to better the lives of the pets in the Portland metro area since 1969. They have numerous shelters that house cats that are available for adoption. They also have about 10-15 dogs that the volunteers foster in their own homes because they don’t have a facillity for dogs at this time. They also provide $40 spay and neuter coupons that various veterinary clinics accept. There are many ways to help Animal Aid, volunteering, adopting, and donating money and food are just a few. Check out their website to see how you can help. My son and I have volunteered at the cat shelters, it was a great way to introduce a 10 years old to the idea of volunteering. We cleaned cat boxes and sanitized the general area, and spent a few hours giving love to each cat. I recommend it highly. Animal Aid also incorporates a lot of fun with volunteering as you can see below.
Multnomah County Animal Shelter
Multnomah County Animal shelter does not charge an adoption fee for cats one year or older, this means you can walk out with a great new friend for $9.00, the cost of the county license. You can check out the animals available for adoption and al the other events they have scheduled on their website.
Check out some photos of the November adoption at our store.

4th of July Safety Tips
Safety Tips for 4th of July with your Animals
- Good long walk or play time during the day to tire them out.
- Some people go camping away from the fireworks.
- Being in a crate with a blanket over the top can sometimes calm your dog.
- Turning on a fan or the TV for some background noise can help.
- If you have a basement, that will cut down the noise. If you can be with them during the worst of the fireworks (10-12pm), that would be ideal.
- Thundershirts™ have been successful for many of our customers, they can take the edge off.
- We have calming treats and homeopathic tinctures that have also been successful.
- If this a severe anxiety for your dog, your vet may prescribe anti-anxiety medication for your dog, remember to get it filled ahead of time. Some neighbors forget that 4th of July in only one day, and not all week.
- If you have a large dog, you might want to walk in pairs, just in case a random firework goes off and you need help controlling you dog.
- Make sure you collar is a little tighter the week prior and a few days after.
- Make sure your tags are up to date on both dogs and cats.
- I would plan on having your cats inside all day on the 4th, maybe even a day before.
- Have fun!!
